IEEE President-Elect Position Statement
Marc T. Apter

Since IEEE is a large diverse organization with members throughout the world, the President of IEEE must ensure that the IEEE continues to be the preeminent Professional Society in the World.

IEEE Members’ potentials and abilities must be developed by continuing the successful programs and efforts we have been conducting over the last few years, as well as the new ideas coming from within the various parts of the Organization. We must always ensure our programs are benefiting the members and the public. We must use the technology developed by our own members to better support our members.

The single biggest challenge facing the President of IEEE over the next few years is the development of programs to implement our Strategic Goals. My experience over the last six years in helping develop and then leading this similar kind of effort in Regional Activities has given me an idea of the complexity involved and effort required to attempt and accomplish this.

I am proud to say I have belonged to the IEEE for over 43 years. The IEEE of today is organized similar to the one formed over 40 years ago, but many things have changed, and we must keep up by continuing the changes first started in 2005, from a group of vertical organizations, to a single organization with a single set of strategic goals.

What I have helped accomplish during the last few years as an IEEE volunteer:

  • myIEEE
  • IEEE.tv
  • The Changes/Simplification of the IEEE Membership application procedures
  • Helping lead SC 2002 & 2005, the two best Sections Congresses yet held
  • Support of Professional Activities outside IEEE-USA
  • Bringing new people forward as candidates for elected and appointed positions
  • The new Student Ethics Competitions
  • Pre-University IEEE Clubs
  • The formation of the Career Services Committee
  • The proposed new RAB Media Excellence in Technology Reporting
  • The Blue Ribbon Committee in 2000’s proposal for a Member Benefit Organization

What are some things we in IEEE must do:

  • We must think globally and strategically, as well as be agile.
  • Professional Activities should be available to our members throughout the world.
  • Offer new services and products as part of the full dues IEEE Member Package.
  • When anything is done to or with the IEEE HQ IT, the question that should be asked is, "Does it support or make things easier for our Members and customers?"
  • The IEEE must present itself (Web, publications, etc.) in a non-U.S. Centric manner.
  • We must identify and cultivate new partners who will join us in better serving our international communities.

The President of IEEE should be a Leader, a supporter, the cheering section, and willing to use good ideas from any source that will help meet the Strategic Goals of the IEEE.
